After School Program

The After School Program is the foundation that all of the other PAL programs are built. The PAL facility is located on 50 Williams Street, but the entrance is located across the courtyard of Global Communications Academy on 85 Edwards St. The after school program is overseen by PAL Supervising Officer Vinny Marfella, Director of Programming Jon Esmail, Sergeant Nicole Mordasiewicz, along with civilian staff, volunteers, Police Explorers, and members of the Hartford Police Department.

We operate on the full day Hartford Public Schools Calendar. Early dismissal, holidays, and predetermined days off PAL does not open (unless otherwise communicated). The program runs from 4:00pm-7:45pm during the days that school is in session. The Summer Youth Empowerment Program hours differ. Please click the Summer Programming link for more information.

A typical after school day goes as follows:

4:00 - 4:15 - Check in/Snack. Every youth will be given a snack upon check-in. Students will meet with groups in designated meeting space.

4:15 - 6:00 - Split Homework Hour/Activity Time. During this time half of the group will receive tutoring by staff and volunteers while the other half of the group participates in the days activities, then switch.

Homework Hour - Students come in and work with staff on homework, projects or general academic skills. Those students who do not have homework will receive alternative education programming that may include reading and writing workshops, typing programs in our Computer Lab and/or character development lessons. There is also an extended homework hour for the kids who want to continue working through activity time.

Activities - Non-formal athletic skills and drills, team building activities, gross and fine motor skill development, large and small group games, arts and crafts, board games, minute to win it games, and various individual and group competitions.

Please note*

On days that we have formal Athletic, Art, or Education based collaborative activities, the participating youth will have practice from 5:00pm-6:00pm and then continue again after dinner.

6:00 - 6:30 - Dinner - Each student will receive dinner which include: fruit, vegetable, grain, meat/meat alternatives, milk/soy milk, juice and/or water.

6:30 - 7:15 - Individual Group Time - This is an opportunity for individual groups or in some cases multiple groups to link up and participate in a chosen activity to end their day. This slot has been utilized for groups to participate in direction following activities, watch informative movies, group discussion, board games, computer time, media room, or free play.

7:15 - 7:45 - Dismissal - At this time Parents and Guardians will arrive to sign their child out to go home.
